Step-by-Step Process to Install Compression Packing

In this article, you get a complete overview of how to install compression packing properly. This article consists of the definition of compression packing, step by step process of installing the compression packing, other industries where it is used, JD Jones and Co (P) ltd. supplier and manufacturer of the compression process.

Before understanding how to install compression packing, you first must be clear about what is compression packing.

Compression packing is a sealing process which is used to seal leakages and control fluid.

Here is the complete process of how to install compression packing-

  1. Clear the stuffing box- before installing a new compression packing, remove all the old packing. Examine the old shaft and sleeves for wearing or scoring and if the wearing or scoring is excessive replace it with a new one.
  2. Measure the size of the packing- before cutting the Compression packing, make sure it matches the size of the compression packing.
  3. Cut the coil or spiral ring into separate rings- Never put the coil inside the stuffing box without cutting it into rings. Rings can be cut outside the stuffing box if shaft wear is not present.
  4. Rings must be installed one at a time- while installing the rings, make sure the shaft and the stuffing box are clean. In case there is any accumulation of dirt, clean it with lubricant. The rings should be firmly seated with a tamping tool.
  5. Allow the pump to leak freely- after installing the last ring, turn the pump on. If there is a water leakage for the next one hour then the installation of compression packing is proper.
  6. Wait for safety indication- Never try to stop the leakage after installing of the compression packing, until a safety indication is given. Stopping the leakage can also result in burning in the compression packing to burn up.

Compression packing apart from its usage in pump machines, is widely used in services industries like marine, water, sewage, and nuclear. In process industries like paper steel mills and petrochemical, compression is a piece of important mechanical equipment.

The packing is used to seal all types of fluid which include acid, caustic, solvent, gas, steam and many more.
